When the Spanish Agrado speaks Greek, her language moves defiantly from the boulevard of proper verbal communication to the backstreets of everyday, familiar speech, often adopting a peculiar idiom of her own. Just as Agrado’s personality deviates from the norm, so too does her speech depart from conventional linguistic codes. The Greek translation takes care to activate those connotations that convey the effect of the original—what translation theory describes as Nida’s “dynamic equivalence”. (Translator’s Note, 2010.)

Someone had told me that Dina was adopted, that she wasn’t Maritsa’s biological daughter. He said that she was the daughter of a whore who died at birth and Maritsa took it upon herself to raise her col league’s baby. He’d actually syllabicated the word “col league” like trying to say that Dina was twice the whore. And yet no other creature like her had ever trodden the earth before.

The operation confirmed that the royal manor was founded in the last third of the 14th century in a sector inhabited since the 8th century, as were the villages of Potamia and Ayios Sozomenos. For the latter, this dating is confirmed by stratigraphy and by the discovery of a monetary hoard datable between 1368 and 1373. The manor, described as a summer resort, was built of dressed stone in a quadrangular layout around an arcaded courtyard. Όταν ξύπνησε ο Γκάο Τζιαλίν, δεν είχε ιδέα τι ώρα ήταν, κι ας κόντευε μεσημέρι. Τον τελευταίο μήνα, όλες οι μέρες ήταν ίδιες: πήγαινε για ύπνο νωρίς και σηκωνόταν αργά, αλλά ήταν λιγοστές οι ώρες που κοιμόταν πραγματικά. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της νύχτας, όλη τη νύχτα, τα μάτια του ήταν ορθάνοιχτα. Κρίνοντας από το τσαλακωμένο πάπλωμα, καταλάβαινες ότι δεν κοιμόταν, υπέφερε. Όσο πλησίαζε η αυγή, οι γονείς του σάλευαν σιγά-σιγά, μέσα στο σπίτι κυλούσαν οι ήχοι του χωριού, και σηκωνόταν επιτέλους, αναμεταξύ ύπνου και ξύπνιου. Διέκρινε αμυδρά τη μάνα του να κουβαλά καυσόξυλα από την αυλή και να καταγίνεται με το φυσερό. Άκουγε ακόμη τον πατέρα του να χωλαίνει – το ένα βήμα ελαφρύ, το άλλο βαρύ – καθώς μάζευε τα εργαλεία του για να ανέβει στα βουνά. Τον άκουγε να λέει στη μάνα να ετοιμάσει κάτι καλύτερο για βραδινό… έπειτα έκλεινε τα μάτια για να μην αφήσει τα δάκρυα να κυλήσουν, και αποκοιμιόταν.
